Paintings at Goldenstein Gallery

Autumn's Turn
24x36 oil/canvas
Available through Goldenstein Gallery

Back when I lived near Sedona, Arizona, I hooked up with what I consider one of Arizona's premier galleries:  Goldenstein Gallery.  Due to a number of issues, the gallery closed its physical space a couple of years ago but began having the artwork "hosted" by Sedona resorts.  Interestingly, that business model is how Goldenstein started, and so when it returned to it, it knew what was doing.  Today, I have my paintings hung at Seven Canyons Resort and L'Auberge de Sedona where, should you visit, you can see them.

I want to share the paintings  with my blog readers, in case you don't have the opportunity to visit Sedona and its beautiful "red rock country."  All the paintings are available via Goldenstein at this link.

Upcoming Exhibitions

Thanks to the pandemic, I'm finding time to enter my work into a few juried art exhibitions.  Why do I thank the pandemic?  Many of the upcoming exhibitions have switched from being in a real gallery to being online.  That means no shipping costs!  So, I can take the money I would have spent on shipping and apply it to registering for the juried exhibitions.  Some of these have awards, but some do not.

So here are a few I'm in or will be in:

American Impressionist Society Juried Online Exhibition

After the Flood 16x20 Oil (sold)

The exhibit will be up on September 9 at www.AmericanImpressionistSociety.org.  Awards will also be announced that day.

Pastel Society of New Mexico Signature Member's Show (Online)

Autumn  Splendor 20x28 Pastel (Available)

Spring Flood II 12x18 Pastel (Available)

You can see all the images in the Signature Show here, as well as purchase information.  The "exhibit" will be up until September 11.

Plein Air Painters of New Mexico Online Exhibition (November 7-29, 2020)

This one will be in an actual, physical space:  Wilder-Nightingale Gallery, Taos.  I would love to post the images of my two accepted paintings here, but PAPNM has asked we not post them until the judging is done and awards are given, which will be November 7.  So, I'll post them then.

New Summer Studio

My New Barn Studio

A proper artist needs a proper studio--even a plein air painter.  There's always stuff to store and paintings that are better adjusted indoors than out.  But as much as I've enjoyed my small studios over the years, I've always had a hankering for a barn studio.  It's not so much that I have a need for more space for stuff as it is a need for just more, well, space.  Room to swing a brush in.  Room for the light to play in.  Room to breathe in.

If you've seen photos of the studios of historic painters, the studios are usually quite large.  Mostly, that's because the painters made big paintings, and they needed a ceiling high enough for their tall easels and room for storing all those big paintings.  And, it seems, they needed space for a day bed for a nap after wielding a big brush all day long.

Here's Jackson Pollack in his studio.  I don't think I'll be painting on the floor, nor will I be painting canvases quite that big.  But I do have my barn studio now, and the electricians have just finished wiring up new lights.  I'm very excited to have it and eager to show it to visitors.  It's also a gallery, filled with my maritime paintings.  I'm calling it "Michael Chesley Johnson Studio at Friar's Bay," and it's open by appointment seasonally.  If you're in the area, email me or give me a call.

Here are some more pictures of the new studio, plus a short video showing it.  (Can't see the video? Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfSoNDX3VTs )

Pumphouse Studio Gallery is Back!

My Studio at Pumphouse Studio Gallery

Whatever happened to Pumphouse Studio Gallery?  It's alive and well in New Mexico!

As you may recall, Trina and I opened Pumphouse Studio Gallery in Sedona, Arizona, several years ago.  Located in a small plaza just across the road from the famous Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village, the studio gallery was a quiet, peaceful place in the cool shade of giant sycamore trees beside Oak Creek.  We had a good time of it, running the gallery and using it as a base camp for my Paint Sedona plein air painting workshops.   After a couple of years, tired of “sitting retail” day in and day out, we sold the space and moved everything to our home south of town.

Just a sampling of artwork in the studio gallery!

Because we lived in a gated community with a vigilant HOA, we couldn't run the gallery publicly.  We had students over to visit it, and if anyone else was interested, we were open quietly by appointment.

But this year, we moved from Arizona to the Zuni Mountains of New Mexico to a large home with two big studios and lots of wall space.  When we finally unpacked all the artwork, we spent several pleasurable days hanging items.  We now are proud to announce that Pumphouse Studio Gallery is once again in business!

We are only one hour from Gallup and two hours from Albuquerque in the historic ranching community of Ramah.  We'd love to have you visit.  To entice you further, we have other attractions nearby:  El Morro National Monument, El Malpais National Monument, the Bandera Ice Caves and the Zuni and Acoma Pueblos.   And if you want to make more than just a day trip, we also have some good local restaurants—Ancient Way Cafe, Stagecoach Cafe, the Village Bistro and Chu-Chu's—plus lodging options at El Morro RV Park & Cabins, the Inn at Halona and more.

For now, we're open by appointment only.  To visit, please contact me at pumphousestudiogallery@gmail.com and we'll arrange a time!

And don't forget, this is also "base camp" for my Paint the Southwest plein air painting workshops!

Elahkwa!  (“Thank you!,” in Zuni.)

Post-Opening: Acadia Invitational III at Argosy Gallery, Bar Harbor, Maine

Posing beside my "Acadian Summer" (top) 12x24 oil

Trina and I just returned from an enjoyable weekend down in Bar Harbor, Maine.
As you may recall, this was the weekend for the opening of the Third Acadia Invitational exhibition, which was organized by Argosy Gallery.  It was a beautiful weekend with plenty of sunshine and warm weather, which is always a plus when visiting Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor or Mount Desert Island.  We got to MDI early in the day, enjoyed a hike at a Nature Conservancy site on the western, "quiet side" of the island, and then spent the afternoon in Northeast Harbor exploring and taking photographs.

The Opening

My two other paintings, "On the Edge" (left) 9x12 oil and
"The Schooner Margaret Todd" (right) 12x16 oil

That evening, we joined 18 of the 30 invited artists plus many collectors at the Bar Harbor Inn for the opening.  Amy and Charlie Sidman of the gallery did a fantastic job in hanging the work and organizing the reception.  As the sun went down, many of us headed out to the porch to view the spectacular sunset.  The "Margaret Todd," a four-masted schooner, was coming in from its sunset cruise, and was a perfect color accent to the sunset with its red sails.

The "real" schooner Margaret Todd, on the right with red sails

A Bar Harbor sunset

Sunday, we worked our way very slowly back home, visiting Prospect Harbor, Winter Harbor and Corea, looking for photo opportunities and future painting spots.

Now the exhibition has been moved from the Bar Harbor Inn to Argosy II, the gallery's location on the town green, where you can see (and buy!) the paintings. Argosy II is located on the Bar Harbor  at 6 Mt Desert Street. For details, contact the gallery at 207-288-9226 or send email to info@argosygallery.com.

Here's a short video of the Margaret Todd slowly sailing home.  If you're receiving my blog by email and can't see the video, here is a link.

Acadia Invitational III at Argosy Gallery in Bar Harbor

"Acadian Summer"
12x24 oil by Michael Chesley Johnson
Available at Argosy Gallery as part of the Acadia Invitational Exhibition

This weekend marks the opening of the Acadia Invitational III exhibition for Argosy Gallery in
Bar Harbor, Maine.  I'm proud to be one of thirty nationally-recognized artists participating.  Every few years, the gallery invites a select number of artists to paint in and around Acadia National Park and to then present these works in a show that runs for over a year.  You can see the three paintings I will be exhibiting in this post.

From the Argosy Gallery website:
On July 29 we will open the Third Acadia Invitational at the Bar Harbor Inn. This event, our most ambitious yet, features thirty distinguished artists, ninety fine paintings and fifteen awards, all to celebrate our region's striking and celebrated landscape. The exhibition and sale will be open to the public Saturday, the 29th, from 2-5 pm, and Sunday, the 30th, from 9 am - 6 pm. Everyone is also welcome to the Saturday evening reception; please contact the gallery for information and an invitation. After this opening weekend, the paintings will be on display at the Argosy II throughout the season.
When the first announcement of the Invitational appeared in the Nov/Dec issue of American Art Review, half a dozen artists called about entering. It certainly caught their eye. However, invitations and acceptances had been completed long before then. Participating artists, each of whom will have visited and painted in Acadia by the time of the show, come from eleven states and four countries. Twelve have been in one or both of the earlier Acadia Invitationals, eighteen will be new to this special show. We anticipate it being one of the most important landscape shows in the country this year.
The Bar Harbor Inn is located at 1 Newport Drive, Bar Harbor, Maine.  Argosy II is located on the Bar Harbor town green at 6 Mt Desert Street.  For details, contact the gallery at 207-288-9226 or send email to info@argosygallery.com.

Trina and I will be at the opening reception on Saturday night.  We hope you will be among the guests!

New Painting: Autumn's Turn

Autumn's Turn
24x36 oil/canvas
Available through Goldenstein Gallery, Sedona, Arizona
928-204-1765
info@goldensteinart.com

This winter, I'm spending more time in the studio, working on larger projects.  I want to share with you the result of my latest project.

One of my very favorite spots on the planet is Red Rock Crossing in Sedona, Arizona.   The clear, cool snowmelt and spring water from the mountains and forests of northern Arizona descend through Oak Creek Canyon to this special place.  Here, the rushing waters widen and rest, lapping gently at shelves of red rock edged with graceful sycamore trees and gnarled cottonwood, all beneath the eternal gaze of Cathedral Rock.

For many years I've wanted to make a painting of what, to me, makes this place so special.  Although I love Cathedral Rock, for this piece I've chosen to keep its magnificence in the background and instead to give the creek center stage.  I've presented Red Rock Crossing as it appears in autumn, when the cottonwoods and willows are at their best color, and when the red rocks beneath the surface glow with a sympathetic light.  "Autumn's Turn" offers a window onto this restful place and time.

I chose to present this moment in a way that shows the full breadth of the creek without being impeded by a frame.  Although you could frame this 24 by 36 original oil painting, I have painted the edges of the canvas to create the illusion that the scene continues beyond its bounds.

"Autumn's Turn" is available only through Goldenstein Gallery in Sedona, as noted above.  This is a one-of-a-kind vision of Red Rock Crossing.  No reproductions of it will be made, so you will be guaranteed to have the one and only original.

Here is a video of the painting (can't see it? here's the link: https://youtu.be/jZ4aF3LTFN4 )

Goodbye, Sedona - Until the Fall

Trina and I are now on our way, heading for eastern parts.  Just before we left, we hit one of our favorite trails in West Sedona.  Trina took a picture of me, which gives you an idea of the scenery we've been enjoying this year.

We'll be back in the fall, just in time for the Sedona Plein Air Festival.

I would here like to give my thanks to Goldenstein Gallery and all the great people that work there.  I just started showing with the gallery, and they've already sold a painting of mine.  If you're in Sedona and would like to see my work in person, please visit them at 70 Dry Creek Road.  Above is a panorama of the gallery with a beautiful view of Thunder Mountain behind it.

While we're on the road, I'll be re-posting some old (but valuable!) blog posts as well as updates on our travels.  It won't be long, though, before we arrive on Campobello Island, where I'll be teaching plein air painting workshops in Maine.  Happy trails to us!

Demonstration at L'Auberge de Sedona for Goldenstein Gallery

Painting at L'Auberge de Sedona

If you're in the area this Sunday, I invite you to come to L'Auberge de Sedona along the banks of Oak Creek to watch me paint.  As one of Goldenstein Gallery's artists, I am participating in its Artist-in-Residence program there.  The AIR program is a cooperative effort by the gallery and L'Auberge, one of the town's most scenic resorts, to present free, educational opportunities to the public.

I'll be at the resort this Sunday (March 13) from 11:30 to 2, near the restaurant and along the creek.  I hope you'll join me at 301 L'Auberge Lane, Sedona, Arizona.  (Their website is www.lauberge.com.)

If you've been following my blog over the years, you'll know I've painted regularly at L'Auberge for the Sedona Plein Air Festival.  I'm looking forward to setting up my easel by the creek's quiet, sun-dappled waters and under the sycamores again.  If you haven't been to L'Auberge, you're in for a treat!

In addition to watching me paint, you'll be able to see some of my work at L'Auberge's restaurant. You can see more at Goldenstein Gallery, 70 Dry Creek Road, Sedona, Arizona. (The website is www.goldensteinart.com.)

Here's the painting I did last time.  If you're interested, please contact Goldenstein Gallery!  With all this warm, spring-like weather, I think I'll have more leaves on the trees next time.

Decades in the Making Opening at Goldenstein Gallery

Goldenstein Gallery Artists
(Photo: Goldenstein Gallery)

Please join me this Friday, March 4, 2016, at Goldenstein Gallery for the opening of "Decades in the Making" from 5-8 p.m. as part of Sedona's monthly First Friday art walk.

Many of the artists, pictured above, have been making art for literally decades--hence the name of the show.  We are painters, sculptors in wood, metal and stone, and makers of jewelry.  It'll be a pleasant evening under Sedona's starry skies!

Goldenstein Gallery is located at 70 Dry Creek Road, Sedona, Arizona.  For more information, visit www. GoldensteinArt.com.

March Newsletter from Michael Chesley Johnson

Afternoon at Otter Cliff 12x24 oil by Michael Chesley Johnson
Available!
March 2016
Sedona, Arizona

Spring is still a few weeks away, but here in Sedona we've been enjoying springtime weather for over a month. Everyone's saying spring has come early this year. Cottonwoods are filled with green catkins, fruit trees are blooming, and along the creeks songbirds are busy making nests. Personally, I think this weather is getting hot! It won't be long before we'll be heading back to Campobello Island.

Exhibition News

I am hard at work on a series of 24 small paintings of Acadia National Park that will be exhibited in Bar Harbor this summer. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Park, Argosy Gallery will unveil these paintings on July 1. I'll be posting images of these paintings once they're all done to my studio page on Facebook and elsewhere. Details on the exhibit will be available at http://www.argosygallery.com

Plein Air Painting Festival News

I'm pleased to announce I've been invited to two more plein air painting events this year. I'll be returning to both the Castine (Maine) and Sedona events. This will be my fourth year at Castine and Grand Canyon, and my ninth at Sedona.
Workshop News

If you've been holding back on coming to my Canadian Paint Campobello workshops because you didn't have a passport, this summer I will be shifting the program entirely to Lubec, Maine. We'll have plenty of great scenery: bold ocean cliffs edged with storm-blasted trees, quiet marshes and inlets, and—yes!—lighthouses. If you've not been to that part of Maine, Lubec is a historic fishing village with lobster boats and beautiful old homes.

I am offering a package deal for my Lubec workshops this summer. You get to stay in our Artists Retreat Studios & Gallery, which is just a short walk from the beach and also the shops and restaurants on Water Street. Total package price is $800. (The workshop by itself is $300.) The house is a traditional Cape built in 1867 with water views and a delightful cliff-top sitting area. For full details, please visit http://www.PaintCampobello.com.#workshops

See the end of this newsletter for a full listing of workshops, including my April 22-24 workshop in Scottsdale, Arizona, at Scottsdale Artist's School, as well as others in Illinois, Indiana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Michigan and even Italy!

Painting Retreat News

Who Wants to Join Me in Italy?

I know this sounds like a long time off, but it's not. June 16-23, 2018, I will leading a workshop in Florence. Imagine a week of painting the Tuscan landscape! Our group will stay at the Villa Fattoria Bacìo in Certaldo Alto with painting excursions to Siena, La Meridiana, San Gimignano and Barberino. Price starts at € 2,200 (about $2400 USD) and includes transportation to/from the Florence airport, and daily transportation to locations and all meals. The group sponsoring the trip has run many such workshops there with some big names, so I was very excited when they approached me about teaching. If you're interested and would like details as I get them, please let me know. We are now taking deposits for the trip.

Zion National Park Painting Retreat

Each year, Trina and I host a painting retreat in a beautiful place. April 22-29, 2017, we will return to Springdale, Utah, and Zion National Park. If you haven't painted in Zion before, you are in for a real treat! Zion has several paintable views at every bend in the road. This will be our third time hosting this particular retreat, and it just keeeps getting better. If you're interested, please let me know. Because this is not a workshop but a real retreat, I do reserve space for previous students. If you want to go but haven't taken a workshop with me yet, do so now! Details are at http://www.pleinairzion.com/

That's all for now. As always, please follow my Plein Air Painter's blog for painting tips and techniques, and my Michael Chesley Johnson website for new paintings, videos and books, workshops and announcements.

Artist-in-Residence for Goldenstein Gallery and L'Auberge de Sedona

Thunder Mountain Shadows, 11x14 oil by Michael Chesley Johnson
Available at Goldenstein Gallery

As part of my new relationship with Goldenstein Gallery in Sedona, I'll be participating this year in its Artist-in-Residence program.  The AIR program is a cooperative effort by the gallery and L'Auberge de Sedona, one of the town's most scenic and elegant resorts, to present to free, educational opportunities with gallery artists.

For me, this involves demonstrating once a month at L'Auberge down on the banks of Oak Creek.  If you've been following my blog over the years, I've painted there regularly for the Sedona Plein Air Festival.  I'm looking forward to setting up my easel by the creek's quiet, sun-dappled waters and under the sycamores again.  If you haven't been to L'Auberge, you're in for a treat!  Plus, there is a very fine restaurant right on the water.

I'll be demonstrating this Sunday (February 14, 2016, Valentine's Day) from 12-2 by the creekside restaurant.  I hope you'll join us at 301 L'Auberge Lane, Sedona, Arizona.  (Their website is www.lauberge.com.)

Also, yesterday I delivered two more paintings to the gallery.  I've added their images to this post, but it's always good to see them in person, which you can do at Goldenstein Gallery, 70 Dry Creek Road, Sedona, Arizona.  (The website is www.goldensteinart.com.)

I'm happy to announce that I am now represented in Sedona by Goldenstein Gallery.  Goldenstein is the premier contemporary art gallery in northern Arizona and has a fantastic collection of paintings, sculpture and furnishings.  I recently delivered two new paintings, images of which I've posted here.  You'll note that "Waterfall" is the featured painting for my book, Outdoor Study to Studio:  Take Your Plein Air Paintings to the Next Level.  "Slide Rock Fault" is a piece I painted on-location at Slide Rock State Park.

By the way, I am also part of the gallery's Artist-in-Residence program.  For this program, I will be demonstrating at L'Auberge de Sedona on Sunday, February 14 (Valentine's Day), from 12-2.  L'Auberge is Sedona's favorite luxury creekside resort located at 301 L'Auberge Lane in Uptown.  I'll be demonstrating again on Sunday, March 13, and Sunday, April 17, in case you miss the first one.  The resort's website is http://www.lauberge.com.

New Work in Great Southwest Gallery for the Holidays

Morning in the Plaza 8x6 oil
by Michael Chesley Johnson

I delivered these two new paintings to Great Southwest Gallery today - just in time for the holidays!  Both of these feature scenes from the famous Tlaqueupaque Village, which is where Great Southwest is located.   Please stop in and take a look.  Ask anybody; everybody knows where Tlaquepaque is.  Great Southwest is in Patio de las Campañas.

La Campaña 8x6 oil

Also, I want to remind everyone that I have a series of pastel-only classes coming in January.  These are on Saturdays (January 9, 16 and 23) from 9-2 and are for all levels.  The first class will be on Pastel Basics; the second, on Color for the Pastel Painter; and the third, Plein Air Basics for the Pastel Painter.  These classes are fully independent.  That is, you can take any one of them or all of them.  Cost is $75 per class with pre-registration required.  Classes will be held at Gandolfo Studios in West Sedona, Arizona.  For details, please contact me at mcj.painter@gmail.com or visit www.PaintSedona.com.

Don't forget about my regular Paint Sedona workshops!  These will be happening all winter, each week.  Workshops run Tuesday-Friday, 9-1 each day.  Because the workshop size is limited to four, this will give you plenty of personal attention.  I'll demonstrate each day with a lecture, and you'll have the rest of the time to paint.  I'll go from easel to easel offering help.  For details, please visit www.PaintSedona.com.

New Gallery – Northern Tides

As I prepare to leave Campobello Island for the season, I'm proud to announce that I have a new gallery. Northern Tides in Lubec, Maine, will be representing me in the area. The gallery is under new ownership, so I'm looking forward to my relationship with them. They are also representing Trina, and they now have several of her beautiful fabric pieces and kaleidoscopic images.

Northern Tides is at 24 Water Street, a quaint little building right on the waterfront. I understand from the owner that she'll be installing a weather station plus a webcam, so it'll be exciting to be able to check the tide level—and the snow level—while we're in Arizona. The gallery will be open year-round, so if you're looking for holiday gifts or something to liven up your winter, I hope you'll check them out!

Below are my paintings they have at the moment. I'll be delivering more next spring.

Paintings Delivered to Symbiosis Fine Art

My gallery in Saint Andrews, New Brunswick, has been very good at selling my work this summer, so today I'm delivering four more paintings to it.  Here they are:

Flood Tide at Dawn, 12x16 oil/canvas by Michael Chesley Johnson

July 9x12 oil/panel by Michael Chesley Johnson

June Noon 9x12 oil/panel by Michael Chesley Johnson

Water Street 12x9 oil/panel by Michael Chesley Johnson

I'm delighted to be in this gallery as the artwork is very well-presented and the owner, an artist himself, truly understands the business.  Also, Saint Andrews is a delightful seaside resort, and I love going there so I can poke around the shops and photograph (and even paint!) the historic homes.

Symbiosis Fine Art is located at 157-B Water Street, right next to Honeybeans Coffee.  Also for sale is beautifully-crafted jewelry by Matt Watkins of Earthforge Design, paintings by Cedar Sky, soda-and-lime glassworks by Jamie-Lynn Gardner and fine art photography by Jorgen Klausen.  Here is the website:  http://www.symbiosisfineart.com/  I hope you'll stop in!
