It's That Time of Year Again: 2021 Calendar and 50% Sale!

The 2021 Calendar is Here!

Not long ago, I complained to my mother, who is in her upper 80s, how time seems to fly faster as I get older.  She replied, "Just wait until you're my age!"

I'm surprised that it's almost November.  The holiday season is, once again, right around the corner.

With that in mind, I have two things to offer you for the holidays: My 2021 calendar and a 50% sale.

2021 Calendar

I've made a collage of the images, which you can see at the top of the post.  I've chosen my favorite paintings from this year.  Since we weren't able to spend the summer on Campobello Island, I ended up making several paintings of Scotland instead, which are included for the summer months.  The calendar is only $10.99, and you can get it from Lulu at this link.

50% Sale

I don't think I've ever offered 50% off my paintings before!  Through December 31st, I'm offering 50% off of any painting and any number of paintings from my website. To make shipping easier, these will all be unframed (even if the description says they are framed.)  I'll include free shipping to the lower 48 states; if you are outside this area, I'll contact you for shipping costs.  Also, keep in mind that most of my Maine and Canadian Maritimes paintings are trapped at my Canadian studio; I won't be able to ship those until Canada lets US visitors in again.  Southwestern paintings, however, I can ship with no problem.  Use the coupon code “Holiday50” on checkout for the discount.  Go here for the details.

Holiday Sale

And now we return to our regularly scheduled programming.

Green Repeats 9x12 Oil

"Green Repeats"
9x12 Oil by Michael Chesley Johnson
US$250
AVAILABLE - contact info@mchesleyjohnson.com

One of the wonderful things about water is that waves repeat.  Big crashing waves or, as in the case of this painting, little ripples.  This scene depicts a quiet, intimate spot that is one of my very favorites in the Roosevelt-Campobello International Park.  The tide is going out (or maybe coming in), and the ripples catch the green reflections...the repeats.

Fallen 9x12 Oil

"Fallen"
9x12 Oil by Michael Chesley Johnson
US$250
Available - contact info@mchesleyjohnson.com

I've always loved these trees that fall and then get beached.  As the winter storms cut into the headlands, trees are often their victims.  They then roll and tumble in the ocean until the bark is stripped off and the wood turns silvery--they become perfect sculptures.  Here is one, half-buried in the sand and cobbles on Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada.

2017 Holiday Sale! Paintings, Paintings, Paintings!

Fifteen Paintings!

Every year about this time, I like to offer some of my smaller paintings at a special holiday price.  It’s an opportunity for you to acquire some nice pieces as gifts for yourself or for friends.  These 15 oil paintings feature either land forms, trees or water–my favorite subjects!

The collage above only gives you an idea of the paintings.  Go to my holiday sale page at this link to see the images in all their glory.   You can order them there directly, too.

Paintings this size sell for $700 framed in my galleries.   But for this sale only, you can get them unframed for only $150, which includes shipping to the lower 48 states in the US.  PayPal, credit card or check accepted.  Paintings will ship after November 15 via USPS Priority Mail.

So, think of that favorite someone–even if it’s yourself!

By the way, don't forget that I am now taking registration for my New Mexico programs:

First is the painting retreat in Santa Fe, April 16-23, 2018.  This will be a small group, and designed for experienced plein air painters.  We'll be painting in the historic areas of town plus some other locations just outside of town that I love.  You an also plan on visits to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum plus the New Mexico Museum of Art.  We've run the retreat at this time of year before, and it's a beautiful time to visit the city.  The wisteria will be in bloom!  Our retreat will be at the same time as PleinAir Magazine's convention. For only a few hundred dollars more, you can be with us -- and get lodging and breakfast and more days! You don't get lodging and breakfast when you sign up for the convention!   Details at www.PaintNewMexico.com

Second is my "Private Painting Intensive Study" program at my home and studio, again, for experienced outdoor painters.  I'll post more about this later, but for details, please visit www.PaintTheSouthwest.com.

Less Expensive than Dinner for Two

Butte Shadows #989 - 5x7 oil

Looking for that perfect gift for yourself or a friend? Look no further! You can purchase an original work of art for less than dinner for two at a fine restaurant. I'm pricing each item for only $50, no matter what the size.  Visit http://www.michaelchesleyjohnson.com/holiday/holiday_sale.html

This time, I'm also including a few watercolor sketches.  When I'm not painting oil or pastel, I enjoy pulling out the watercolor block.  Painting watercolor is a different process for me, so it exercises some mental muscles that tend to not get used.

Made in the USA Christmas Gift Suggestions

Near Gibson Beach (Point Lobos), 12x24, oil

I've been in the studio this week, working on the painting pictured above. The moment I came across the scene at Point Lobos near Carmel, I knew I had to paint it. I've been using plein air sketches for color references and a few photos for details. I think I'm done at this point, but I'll give the piece a few more days on the easel.

Now that the rush of Black Friday is over and done with, I'm assuming everyone has calmed down and resumed gift-buying with a more reasonable approach. With that in mind, I thought I'd offer up some gift suggestions for you. These might make a nice gift for a loved one - or even yourself. And your dollars will stay right here in the U.S.A.!

Holiday Painting Sale: My holiday sale of sketches and demos in oil and pastel continues. Prices are very reasonable, and I ship quickly. Click here

2013 Calendar and Books: My 2013 calendar, featuring 12 oil and pastel paintings from the past year, is out. You can also get any of my books, including Backpacker Painting, Through a Painter's Brush: The American Southwest, Through a Painter's Brush: A Year on Campobello Island, and Paint Sedona: A Plein Air Painter's Field Guide. All of the books are available both as paperbacks and as eBooks and downloads. Click here

Art Instruction Videos: I have two full-length instruction videos for plein air painters. One is in oil, the other in pastel. If you can't afford to take one of my workshops, these videos give you a close-up look of my approach to outdoor painting. These can be ordered through Artists Network TV. Click here

A Paint Sedona Workshop Week: I have a series of workshops for the plein air painter in Sedona, and they run from now until mid-April. The workshops vary, with some intended for "all level" painters and others for more advanced painters. We will work in the mornings, and you will have the afternoons free to paint on your own or explore the area. I will critique anything you do in the afternoons. By the way, the National Weather Service is predicting a warmer winter than usual, so if you think Sedona is too cool, think again! Temps have been in the high 60s all week. I also have some special topic weeks, such as "Advanced Color." Click here

Sedona Arts Center "Fundamentals of Plein Air" Course: I'm offering a two-session class through the Sedona Arts Center on the basics of plein air painting, February 16 & 23. If you'd like to ease into plein air painting with time between painting sessions to absorb material, this is the course for you! Click here

Artist's Network University "Getting Started in Plein Air" Online Course: You may think it's strange to learn how to paint outdoors through an online course, but I taught this course this past summer, and it worked really well. The course runs for four weeks (Jan 8-Feb 1.) For course material, you get some of my mini-videos, a manual on outdoor painting plus Bob Rohm's wonderful book, The Painterly Approach.  You'll have an assignment each week followed by a careful, personal critique with suggestions for improvement. Click here.

My Plein Air Essentials Online Courses: Broken down into three parts, this is a series of mini-videos plus a manual for outdoor painting. The first course covers the basic; two other courses cover information that is specific to oil or pastel painters. Although this is strictly a self-study course without critiques, you can always ask me a question! Click here

And finally, even though the below workshops are based in Canada, some of these dollars will end up in the US:

A Paint Campobello Workshop Week: Similar to my Paint Sedona workshops, but these are intended for every level of painter. Campobello, NB, and nearby Lubec, ME, where we may also paint, offer some fantastic maritime scenery. Workshops are based out of my summer studio and gallery. Click here

Announcing My 2012 Holiday Studio Sale!

As you can see from the photo above, we're having some nice autumn color happening right now in Sedona. I'd love to be painting it. But instead I've been laboring in the studio, selecting treasures for my 2012 Holiday Studio Sale. For this holiday season, I've pulled out 31 original oil paintings with subjects as varied as architecture, water, trees, Sedona's red rocks and more. There's something for everyone, as they say.

The paintings are 9x12 plein air sketches and demonstrations from some of my workshops. I'm selling them unframed, but they are on hardboard panel, so you can frame them yourself very easily.

I've priced these pieces to sell - $100 each. And that includes shipping!

I'll be shipping these as soon as I can. I have a trip planned next week, but if you order while I'm gone, I'll ship as soon as I get back.

By the way, I still have openings in this winter's Paint Sedona workshops. Just like the paintings, a workshop would make a nice holiday gift!

Thank you so much for your support, and happy holidays!

Break from the Cottage Series

"Cut Field Colors" 12x12, oil

This is a 12x12 I did last week before I started painting the cottages. I had limited time that afternoon, but my front field was so lovely with color after having it brush-hogged that I wanted to capture it before it turned green again. I spent about 30 minutes on this piece, using a very big brush and letting the paint do its own thing. It's a very loose piece, and I love the brush work.

I was going to paint another cottage today, but the weather was against me. So, what's one of the things a plein air painter does in that case? Why, go through some of his sketches to see where he's been. I pulled out several that I thought some of you might like to have and am putting them up on eBay. Students or other artists often like to get a small piece to see first-hand how a painter works.

These are all oil, and some of them were quick, and others were more studied. There's a good variety of both subject and technique. Trina has helped me put up a few today, and there will be more to come if this works. To see the listings, go to eBay and search on "Michael Chesley Johnson" or follow this link.

Michael's Annual Fall Sale

It's that time of year again! I create lots of 5x7 pastels during the course of a year, and they do tend to pile up. Every fall I like to go through and pick out the best and offer them for sale. This year, I've selected 20. They cover my entire travel year, from Sedona to Campobello Island with a few stops in between.

I usually sell these unframed for $60 a piece, but I'm offering them for $50 each plus $5 shipping. If you purchase more than one, I'll adjust shipping since I can put several in a box.

These 5x7s fit perfectly in the window of a pre-cut 8x10 mat. All you need is the mat and backing, some tape, and a glass 8x10 frame. It's exactly how I frame them!

By the way, I played with PayPal's inventory feature when creating my "Add to Cart" buttons. This is a relatively new thing, and I'm happy to see it. So, you'll know right away if a painting has already been sold!
